Stapleford Granary provides educational activities for all ages; from concerts and music workshops to a diverse range of lectures and art courses in a range of disciplines. The converted farm buildings provide the perfect setting for shared educational and cultural pursuits.
For many years the old granary and barns at Bury Farm in Stapleford in the Cambridgeshire countryside stood derelict, but in 2009 the ACE Foundation, a charitable trust founded in 1958 by Philip Barnes, bought the farm buildings with the intention of giving them a new lease of life. The ACE Foundation is an educational charity that aims to encourage and develop cultural understanding. The vision was to transform these beautiful old buildings into an inspiring space for education, culture, music and the arts. That vision has become a reality following the inspiration of Philip's son Paul Barnes, artistic director Trevor Barlow and local architect Toni Moses. The new Stapleford Granary building was awarded the RIBA Regional East Award 2019 for its authentic renovation into an innovative learning space whilst staying true to many of its original features. The former Granary has been transformed, with a concert hall with excellent acoustic enhanced by the Douglas fir flooring and local gault brick walls, and makes a wonderful recital and lecture hall. The space also includes recording facilities, seminar room, art studios and fully equipped jewellery and silversmithing workshops as well as office space for the Foundation and subsidiary company ACE Cultural Tours. The tranquility of the site, together with its accessibility, make it the ideal venue for those wishing to escape the hectic rush of the everyday in order to develop and learn. It’s a place where anyone with artistic or cultural interests, from beginner to expert, will feel at home and we hope to welcome you here soon.
Stapleford Granary is interested in working with Musicians and Artists who are in need of development time.
The beautiful buildings and surrounding countryside provide the perfect environment for creative minds to meet, rehearse, try new ideas and develop new projects.
Besides providing development space, we can help you arrange opportunities to try out your ideas with audiences.
Stapleford Granary is delighted to be working with the Aldeburgh Young Musicians, Britten Sinfonia, Trinity College Music Exams and the Imogen Cooper Music Trust.
The programme is still in it’s infancy but past projects have included folk musician Kathryn Tickell working with author David Almond to create a touring show of prose, poetry and music; a video recording session by the Jazz Quartet Empirical and sound artist Simon Scott working with choreographer Jane Turner and musician Kevin Flanagan to create a work based on Stapleford Granary’s location for a Summer Festival open day.
The ACE Foundation is a Cambridge-based educational charity founded in 1958 in order to enhance understanding between cultures. Providing support for educational projects, courses and summer schools, the ACE Foundation has played a pioneering role in adult and continuing education. The foundation provides a whole host of educational activities, from worldwide study tours to financial support for a variety of educational projects around the globe. Sometimes intensively, sometimes more creatively, the core aspiration of ACE is to educate. There are no restrictions on who can be educated, we are all learning all the time!
ACE CULTURAL TOURS
ACE Cultural Tours, a wholly owned subsidiary of the ACE Foundation, is the longest established UK provider of cultural travel and a pioneer in adult education. In 1958 the Association for Cultural Exchange began evolving a unique brand of cultural travel, designed for individuals who wished to learn something new and engage in other cultures. The variety and number of tours has grown steadily ever since. The tours are based on inspiring educational themes and blend cultural sightseeing with privileged visits and explanatory talks. Each tour is led by one of our expert Tour Directors who are chosen not only for their specialist knowledge, but equally for the clarity and enthusiasm with which they communicate and impart their passion to others. Many are leading scholars and performers in specific fields. Not only do the profits from the tours go straight back into supporting educational projects worldwide but often it is on the tours that projects are found or initiated that the ACE Foundation then supports.
