Ulrich Heinen studied at the Cologne Conservatoire and the Julliard School in New York and is a previous winner of the prestigious Rostropovich Competition. In 1984 he became principle cellist of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, with whom he performed numerous concertos. Ulrich is the co-founder of the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and a professor at Birmingham Conservatoire.


John Humphreys made his Wigmore Hall debut in 1972 with Busoni's rarely heard Fantasia Contrappuntistica. Since then he has appeared throughout the country as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician with many appearances at The South Bank Centre, Wigmore Hall and BBC Radio 3 broadcasts as performer and commentator (for a programme about John Ogdon).John was Assistant Head of Keyboard Studies at Birmingham Conservatoire until 2009. For over 30 years, John has had a piano duo with Allan Schiller; they have made two highly acclaimed CDs of Busoni and Schubert for Naxos.


Alongside much-loved works by Bach, Schubert and Debussy, their programme also includes Zoë Martlew's tiny (2 minutes) and beautifully evocative Berceuse
