Rosemary Cullum graduated from the Cambridge School of Art in 2013 with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art, having previously spent 50 years as a landscape designer. After exhibiting in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2014), Rosemary returned to study for her Masters at Anglia Ruskin University. During this time she exhibited in galleries across Cambridge and East Anglia, and once again at the Royal Academy in 2018. Solely working with oil paint and using hand-mixed pigments, colour and form dominate the composition.
Rosemary’s fascination with blocks of colour and shapes stems from time spent in working with Stained Glass in her husband’s studio. Adopting the mantra ‘what has gone before leads to what comes later’, many layers and textures are used in the creation of the paintings. The materials – handmade paper, clay, plaster and fabric – along with oils, create many imperfections, all of which contribute to materiality of the canvas. Rosemary lives and works in her converted barn in Willingham.
